British Army Officers used campaign trunks and chests during the 18th and 19th centuries.
They were designed to be packed and carried on the march so needed to be supremely practical and durable. They also had to be stylish and elegant, in keeping with their owners' high social position. As a result, campaign furniture usually featured distinctive brass corners, handles and strap work, for protection as well as decoration.
