Holsten Brewery, also known as Holsten-Brauerei AG, is a renowned brewing company that was founded in 1879 in Altona-Nord quarter, which is now a part of Hamburg. The group currently operates seven breweries across Germany, and its most popular beer brand is the Holsten Pilsener, which is distributed nationwide. The Carlsberg Group acquired the company in 2004.
In 1902, the Holsten Brauerei acquired the Union Brewery in Point Pleasant, Wandsworth, located on the south bank of the River Thames in London. During the First World War, the brewery faced trade issues due to anti-German sentiment and was eventually shut down in 1920. The Holsten Pils was introduced in the UK in 1952, which led to the creation of the premium packaged lager market. In 1979, the first of many award-winning TV ad campaigns featuring actor Donald Pleasence was launched, and in the mid-1980s, Holsten became the UK's number-one selling premium packaged lager.
