The Precious Stones: Topaz (1900)
The dreamlike expression of Topaz in typical to Mucha's poster for his solo exhibition at the Salon des Cent. Mucha's use of flat colour and bold outlines, as seen in the plant in the lower half of the composition, reveals his passion to Japanese prints.
Topaz is entirely representative of Mucha's illustrative style, disclosing the combination of touches of nature, a young lady’s figure and also the in-depth decorative patterned backgrounds. She looks directly at us, with a relaxed, elegant look. Her hair is neatly tied up, and she has just light areas of makeup which ensures her natural beauty is not lost. Her dress has carefully crafted, one of which the straps slips below her shoulder, whilst the lower half is in a light white, the dress stretches well beyond her toes. Mucha often broaden dresses in order to accentuate a lady’s feminity and also to allow other parts of the design to then merge over the top, in this example their are elements of flower buds which come up over the top. There are fairly earthly tones of turquoise and browns which dominate the majority of Topaz, making it more subtle than some of his other brighter pieces.
This picture is now a part of the collection of the Italia Liberty in Rimini, Italy.
