Alphonse Mucha was a Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist who mainly worked in Paris, France. Taking up poster design for financial reasons, Mucha eventually established himself as a poster artist known for his distinctly stylised and decorative designs. Mucha produced this poster of a woman in an embellished outfit for Moët & Chandon, a French fine winery established in 1743 by Claude Moët.
The original design of White Star Champagne by Moët and Chandon is a colour lithograph that takes the form of an advertisement, which depicts a young woman wearing a pale pink dress, holding a basket that holds a vine of red grapes. She is standing in front of a gold background, intertwined with flowers. It is assumed Mucha used a prostitute as the model for the subject as they were inexpensive to employ and were widely available in Paris during the 19th century.
