Chivas Brothers has a long history, dating back to 1801, when John Forrest established a grocery and wine merchant in Aberdeen. The business was then passed on to William Edward, and in 1838, James Chivas joined the company. In 1909, Chivas Regal was introduced as a 25-year-old luxury blend, and it quickly became a popular choice in the USA.
Seagram Co., a Canadian drinks giant, saw the success of Chivas Regal and, the following year, acquired Chivas Brothers, including the Strathisla distillery in Keith. In 1957, a sister distillery, Glen Keith, was built near Strathisla, and the Keith Bond was developed as a maturation and blending facility that gradually expanded over time. To meet the growing demand for whisky in the 1970s, Chivas constructed the All-a-Bhainne and Braes of Glenlivet (now Braeval) distilleries to provide additional malt capacity.
