The Arts and Crafts movement was born in the late 19th century to counterbalance other overly ornate furniture styles, which often lost quality through factory production. In critique of the Industrial Revolution, the heart of the Arts and Crafts movement was traditional craftsmanship, with simplified decorative designs influenced by folk and natural elements, resulting in high-quality furniture with a romantic feel.
The movement set out to create both decorative and functional items, such as furniture, homeware, and art, for the home that were crafted by a single craftsman from start to finish, eliminating the repetitive tasks often associated with a sectional production system.
