Beautiful vintage-framed mirror featuring an Art Nouveau illustration of a woman by the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha.
Title: Amethyst
Amethyst is a famous Art Nouveau lithograph by the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, created in 1900. It is one of four works in his acclaimed "The Precious Stones" series, where each panel features a woman personifying a specific gemstone.
The work depicts an elegant female figure in a flowing purple gown, surrounded by floral motifs. The design is characteristic of Mucha's Art Nouveau style, which is known for its sinuous curves, natural forms, and a harmonious use of colour that echoes the central gemstone.
Mucha designed the composition with the female figure dominating the upper part, while a realistically drawn flower (likely irises, given the colour scheme) features in the lower part. The colour palette—including her robes, hair decorations, and mosaic halo—is rich in violet and lavender hues that evoke the deep purple of the amethyst stone.
The figure's pose is dynamic, with her left arm foreshortened as she lifts her hair. Mucha's preliminary sketches indicate he originally planned a partially nude figure, but the publisher requested coverage for moral considerations.
The mirror style is a clear homage to Alphonse Mucha's distinctive work, known for its flowing "whiplash" lines, elaborate hair, and decorative, flattened backgrounds.
Mucha frequently featured idealised female figures in his posters and decorative panels during the Belle Époque.
