This lovely lithograph mirror, “Bitter Oriental,” was created by the Belgian artist Henri Privat-Livemont in 1897. Although he trained as an interior decorator, Livemont is best known for his Art Nouveau-style poster art.
Bitter Oriental was a drink mixture of gin, orange juice, herbs, and oil.
Livemont combined elements of Japonism with Islamic, Byzantine, and French influences to create this colourful cultural mishmash. The flat perspective of the woodblock prints strongly influenced the formulation of Art Nouveau.
Livemont was the preeminent Belgian artist working in Art Nouveau and lithography. His works were well-received and were included in Les Maîtres de l’Affiche (Masters of the Poster) publications that Jules Chéret published between 1896 and 1900.
Comes with a tremendous mid to light-coloured wooden frame.
It is in excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of original patina.
