Colman's Mustard, a brand synonymous with Norwich, has a rich history spanning over 200 years.
The company was founded in 1814 by Jeremiah Colman, a flour miller, who took over a mustard manufacturing business near Norwich. In 1823, he and his adopted nephew, James, established J & J Colman.
The business moved to the Carrow site in Norwich in 1858 and grew to become the city's most affluent business by 1914.
J.J. Colman, James's son, was known for his visionary ideas on employee welfare, which included building a subsidised school and employing one of the first industrial nurses, years ahead of their time.
Colman's was granted a royal warrant in 1866. The company merged with Reckitt and Sons in 1913 to become Reckitt and Colman, and later became part of Unilever in 1995.
