Coca-Cola, also known as Coke, is a carbonated soft drink produced by the Coca-Cola Company. It has a global presence, with its products being sold in over 200 countries and consumers drinking more than 1.8 billion company beverage servings each day.
Marketed initially as a temperance drink and patent medicine, John Stith Pemberton invented Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia, during the late 19th century. He sold Coca-Cola's ownership rights to Asa Griggs Candler, a businessman whose marketing tactics helped Coca-Cola become dominant in the global soft drink market since the 20th century. The name of the drink is derived from two of its original ingredients: coca leaves and kola nuts (a source of caffeine). The current Coca-Cola formula is a closely guarded trade secret, although various recipes have been reported and experimental recreations have been published. The company has used the secrecy around the formula in its marketing strategy, as only a select few anonymous employees are privy to it. Coca-Cola has inspired imitators and created a whole category of soft drinks known as colas.
